Manabu Mabe was born in Japan and immigrated to Brazil with his family in 1934. In 1959 he was awarded the title of Best National Painter at the São Paulo Biennial, the same year Time magazine declared "The Year of Manabu Mabe." His mature works are recognized for their lyrical abstraction, which meld bold color with gestural calligraphic brushwork.

His works are in the permanent collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas; Art Museum of the Americas, Washington, D.C.; São Paulo Contemporary Art Museum, Brazil; among others.
