Lot Details & Additional Photographs
.52 caliber single-shot, 32-5/8 in. rifled barrel secured with three bands, walnut stock, iron mounts and barrel with brown lacquer, the breechblock marked J. H. HALL / H. FERRY / US / 1838; ramrod is present; overall length 52-1/2 in.

Private North Carolina collection

Fewer than 20,000 thousand of these early martial breechloaders were made between 1819 and 1840. Those examples held in Southern state arsenals were converted to percussion during the Civil War.

The breech block raises as expected when the front lever is pressed, however the hammer will not hold its position when cocked; the brown lacquer finish on the metal elements is largely intact and attractive; expected dings and marks to the walnut stock. Overall very good condition.
