Arthur George "Art" Smith is recognized as one of the leading Afro-Cuban modernist jewelers of the mid-20th century. Born to in Cuba, his family moved to New York when he was three years old. He trained at Cooper Union, New York University, and under the African American jeweler Winifred Mason (1918-1993). Smith's work was featured in Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, and exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts. Art's jewelry recently exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum in 2008-2011, and is held in the permanent collections of various prestigious museums including the Cooper Hewitt Museum, Museum of Art and Design, and Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
