NGC Verified Authentic Bechtler $5 Georgia Gold, 1834-37

Lot Details & Additional Photographs
The obverse reading GEORGIA GOLD 128 .G . 22 CARATS; the reverse with C. BECHTLER AT RUTHERFORD 5 DOLLARS. This rare and desirable type was unfortunately "enhanced" by someone who, using a sharp implement, outlined the outer legends on both sides of the coin. NGC's label calls this foolish meddling "DETAILS ENGRAVED."

Private Virginia Collection

Christopher Bechtler, his son, and nephew operated a private mint for coining gold in Rutherford County, North Carolina between 1831 and 1852. The Bechtler gold sources, whether in North Carolina or in Georgia, were named on the coins. Here we have an example of Georgia gold minted in North Carolina. Though problematic, this sadly abused coin is authentic and thus affords the budget-minded collector an opportunity to acquire a truly historic regional coin.
