Late 18th or early 19th century, Ming style, probably zitan or rosewood, the first with a rounded crestrail, curved back splat with relief carving of bat with chime motif, mortis and tenon joinery, the second with a flat crestrail, curved back splat with relief carving of a bat with chime and tassel motif, mortis and tenon joinery, comes together with original invoice from gallery dated 1983.

The first chair with shrinkage crack to the seat; some discoloration/fading to seat; later glue blocks to underside; later tape to underside; losses to front left corner edge of seat and front left leg; the second chair with a shallow crack with repair; crestrail has been reset; back left edge of seat two peg repairs, possibly to stop a tight hairline crack from spreading.
