after John B. White (American, 1781-1859), General Marion in the Swamp Encampment Inviting a British Officer to Dinner ("The Sweet Potato Dinner")
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
19th century, hand-colored mezzotint engraved by John Sartain after the famous painting by John B. White, Charleston, S.C., this print published by "Geo[rge] S. Appleton for the Promotion of the Fine Arts in the U.S.," framed.

Frame dimensions 23 x 25 3/4 in.

White's original painting of the Patriot General Marion entered the permanent collection of the U.S. Senate in 1899. The work shows a famous episode in which South Carolina's elusive Marion, known as "Swamp Fox," invited a British officer to a modest meal of sweet potatoes for the lack of more elegant fare. The point here was that Americans were resolute in their fight for liberty and were willing to suffer whatever deprivation came their way in the struggle.

Image in nice condition; some wear, including margin toning and some staining; several repaired margin tears; not examined out of frame.
