Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Harkers Island, North Carolina, before 1900, carved and painted wood mounted on a cut log base, published on pages 28 and 30 of Shorebird Decoys of North Carolina by Kroghie Andresen and Philip Harvey

Height 42 in.

From the Personal Collection of Mr. Kroghie Andresen, Charlotte, North Carolina

Former Collection of Roy Willis.

Arguably the finest shorebird decoy extant from North Carolina. The Guthrie family full sized egret is one of the few wading bird decoys from the plume trade era to survive. Fred Guthrie lost interest in hunting shorebirds in the late 1920s when it was outlawed. This egret decoy was stored between the inside and outside boards of the walls in his old home. It was rediscovered in the 1970s when the home was renovated. This decoy is of two-piece construction with the carved root head fitting tightly into the drilled hole in the body. The body is 4.5 inches thick with a length of 16 inches.
Exhibited at Duke University 2023.

Original with light gunning wear, later custom stake and stand.
