John Austin (NC, 1891-1981), Widgeon
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Corolla, North Carolina, circa 1920, carved and painted wood.

Length 15.5 in.

This decoy probably began its life as a redhead but it features the icon blunted forehead. The head has copper strips nailed to the sides to stabilize a working neck break. Watermen made in-field repairs which add to the history and story of the decoy. The ballast on this decoy also deserves close attention as it is made from a door hinge and a hammered lead strip.

Old gunning paint, working repair to the neck.
