Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Duck, North Carolina, circa 1910, carved and painted wood, incised B brand.

Length 15.5 in.

From the hunting rig of Napoleon Bonaparte Etheridge. Etheridge was a veteran Life Saving Serviceman and had his last assignment as the caretaker of the Caffey's Inlet Life Boat Station. He maintained a small rig of Alvirah Wright redheads and canvasbacks, all of which are branded with an incised B.

Alvirah Wright is widely considered one of North Carolina's finest makers. Family members estimate he made between 300 and 500 decoys and sold them commercially for fifty cents each. His redhead decoys have a high head posture and he made several styles of them.

Old gunning paint taken down, working repair to the neck.
