A Large Chinese Silk Embroidered Table or Altar Front Panel
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Qing dynasty (1644-1912), 19th century, silk embroidered panel divided into two sections by a black velvet border, the upper section has a gathering of nobles, the faces are painted onto the silk with realistic detail, the lower panel is larger and filled with several pairs of elegant birds amidst large floral blooms and peaches, framed without a cover.

Frame dimensions 38 1/2 x 79 1/2 in.

This type of embroidered panel would have probably been created for a wedding having the auspicious pairs of birds exhibiting martial harmony and fidelity and the peaches symbolizing longevity. The color was originally a vibrant red, the color associated with weddings in Chinese culture.

Some scattered areas with loose threads; some minor losses to threads on tails of pheasants; a tear to silk between the pheasants and the geese; some scattered light stains; entire panel has faded from original red with light and age; separation and tears to black velvet borders; panel is framed, but can be removed.
