The hinged cover with original indistinct hallmarks, now overstruck with the Russian Kokoshnik mark of Yakov Nikolayevich Lyapunov of St. Petersburg (1898-1903), rectangular form, finely engraved with pictorial scenes amidst ornate foliate and avian designs, the hinged cover with hand-chased pictorial scene of figures on horseback.

A note accompanying the box indicates this was a gift from the daughter of Richard Mumford Pearson, Jr. (1852-1923), a North Carolinian who was a member of the US House of Representatives and ambassador to Persia from 1902-1907 (appointed by President Theodore Roosevelt).
