Educated at the University of Miami, the Chicago Art Institute, and the Penland School of Crafts in Penland, NC, Elaine Reed was a versatile artist and sculptor working in a variety of media, and with an emphasis on the human figure. Reed explains her unique conceptual approach to art making: "As in architecture, there is a container forum involved in the idea. The thing contained comes from our past the idea of who we are, and from where we come. My past forms the connections with the past of others."

A resident of Raleigh, Reed also has received numerous awards and honors during her career as an artist. She has taught art on the college level and in public schools. Her work is included in numerous North Carolina collections, among them the North Carolina Museum of Art, R.J. Reynolds Corporation, Bank of America, Wachovia Bank, and the NC State University Art Museum.

Some possible scattered small chips including the chin and ears; back with some white paint.
