Howard Gaskill was born and raised in Stacy, North Carolina on the inland side of Core Sound. Like so many before him, Howard became a waterman and made a living catching fish, crabbing, trapping, hunting, and doing odd jobs in the community. His sister Suzie married decoy making icon, Mitchell Fulcher. Howard died at the early age of thirty and left his decoy stand to brother Calvin Gaskill (NC, 1893-1974). This root head decoy is possibly the only sleeper known. It is the epitome of fine folk art.

Original paint with light gunning wear, age check down the left side.
