New York, circa 1808-1809, partnership between brothers Colin Van Gelder Forbes (1776-1859) and John Wolfe Forbes (1781-1864), teapot with swan finial, both featuring scroll handles, decorative shell and figural scroll banding, gadroon basin with foliate knee, raised on ball and paw feet. Without monograms.

Colin and John were fourth generation brothers of a silversmith family. Their great grandfather, William Forbes, emigrated from Scotland in 1712. His son Gilbert was the father of William Garret Forbes whom married Catherine Van Gelder in 1777. Two of their three sons were Colin and John, silversmiths for this set.

Some light scratches and a few dents to the basins; ball feet with denting and small tears to underside; jug with possible repairs where legs meet base; some looseness to teapot handle.
