After completing formal studies at the University of Chicago in 1951, Kahn devoted himself to painting full time.

His paintings are in such prominent public collections as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; and more.
