Kight grew up with a market hunter father who was also a decoy carver. After the early death of his father, he worked as a farmer, waterman and hunting guide. Known as a superb athlete, he played baseball for several semi-pro teams and then went on to become a hunting guide for the Corey Lodge on Knotts Island. Making mostly canvas geese and swans, he was also known to make wooden coots, scaup, redheads, mallards and teal.
