Circa 1873-1891 period mark, pattern number 2837, the body featuring a stylized coral design acid etched to the surface atop which are applied floral and foliate vines to either side of a rectangular cartouche engraved "Ashbel Barney / July 29, 1876."

Ashbel Hinman Barney was a member of an old New York family. He was a graduate of Yale University, a veteran of the First World War and a member of the Knickerbocker Club. He died on September 27, 1945 and is buried in Brookville Cemetery on Long Island. His house, a 17th century French chateau was shipped to the United States and rebuilt on Long Island. The house still stands at 27 Wolver Hollow Road, Upper Brookville, New York.
