Pair of Laurel Cast Iron Garden Chairs, Signed HART
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Early 20th century, demilune form, white paint, pierced laurel leaf and berry back with scroll-work seat, swan form front arms and legs, rear twig form legs, signed HART.

27 x 26 x 22 in.

According to Barbara Israel's Book, Antique Garden Ornament: Two Centuries of American Taste, the Laurel pattern was first registered by the Coalbrookdale Co. in England in their 1875 catalogue. Soon after J. L. Mott Iron works published it's Laurel pattern with minor changes: "These American "Laurel" seats bear the name Hart, which, to this point, has yet been identified."

Later paint with flaking and scattered surface rust; one chair with small crack to upper right area of back, the same chair with one later screw to seat; the other chair with a weld repair to the front right corner of seat edge; one chair with a loose stretcher (broken at the tip adjoining to the underside of the chair) causing the rear left leg to be loose (this leg also has later screws).
