Ocracoke, North Carolina, circa 1920s, carved and painted wood.

George is the oldest recognized carver from Ocracoke Island. As a teenager, he traveled in merchant ships to places like the West Indies and beyond as local jobs were very scarce. He was later involved with the schooner freight business and market hunted during the winter months. George made a lot of decoys for the Green Island Club when it was being formed in the 1920s. His brant and geese decoys are exceptional and important.

Old gunning paint, age checks in the bottom.
