Circa 1900, the hinged playing surface opens to reveal a red velvet-lined interior with chain fittings for storage, the outer frame ornately decorated applied scroll work and mounted with bezel set paste "jewels" imitating turquoise, pearls and garnets, fully modeled soldiers stand guard at each corner, including finely modeled and enameled figural playing pieces; with apocryphal Faberge and double-headed eagle marks to case near opening clasp, otherwise no apparent marks.

One "post" to frame is detached, but present, with old glue repair; one chain is detached from a post, with evidence of old glue repair; one figure to corner of case has a detached, but present, arm; one light blue tower with very shallow flake to enamel; several other pieces with very minor flakes to enamel.
