Central cartouche with engraved inscription reading "Presented to / Captain Henry A. Gadsen by Nathan Hurst, Mary Ann Hurst, / Sarah Hurst, and Thomas Brittain, / in acknowledgment of his genuine kindness, / and during their efforts to recover / from Hospital in Charleston, / Captain Fred. Hurst/ 48th N.Y.S.V. / Wounded in the attack / on Fort Wagner / 18th July, 1863. / Dieu Vous Garde ".

Captain Frederick Hurst was born in Nottingham, England in 1842. He immigrated to the US as a young man and enlisted in the 48th New York Infantry in July 1861, at the age of 21. He joined “E” company as a 1st lieutenant, and was promoted to captain in January 1863. He assumed command of the “K” company in February of the same year.

He was wounded in the chest and captured during the Battle of Fort Wagner on July 18th, 1863. He died of his wounds in Charleston shortly afterward and is buried in Beaufort, South Carolina.
