Josiah Wescott (NC, 1858-1909), Curlew
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
New Inlet, North Carolina, before 1900, carved and painted wood, loosely mounted to a wood base.

Length 13 in.

From the Personal Collection of Louis Daniel, III

Josiah was the caretaker of the New Inlet Life Saving Station and frequently hunted this area as well as the beach flats from Oregon Inlet to Rodanthe. This decoy appears to be carved from a cedar limb and the bill is doweled through the head. A rig mate is published on page 154 of Shorebird Decoys of North Carolina by Kroghie Andresen. These rare Wescott curlews have been affectionately known as the "banana birds" by the collecting community.

Original paint with light gunning wear.
