19th century, opaque watercolor on paper, portrait of Maharajah Ajit Singh of Jodhpur (1678-1724) standing in profile against a graidated blue background, he carries a black shield to his side, and wears pearls and jewels fitting of his rank, a green halo outlined in gilt encircles his head, framed under glass.

Frame dimensions 18 1/8 x 14 3/8 in.

From the collection of Ambassador David Morgan Bane, a career international diplomat to Asia. Throughout his long career, Ambassador Bane and his wife Patricia assembled an extensive collection of paintings, sculpture, and mixed media art works from the places they lived. During his last post in Bombay, India as Consul General in the 1970s, he purchased a selection of Indian art works, the painting offered here included.

Overall good condition; a few spots of loss to paper; painting is laid down to backing on mat.
