Lot Details & Additional Photographs
1960s, walnut and hickory, slightly curved walnut crest rail with (18) oak spindles, single board figured walnut plank seat with live-edge, butterfly joint to the right side, raised on four turned tapered legs, very faint partial ink inscription to underside (illegible); together with a copy of the original order card from the Nakashima workshop.

30 x 81.5 x 36 in.

By Descent of the Original Owner John Gallagher (Bucks County, PA, 1964)

A declared National Treasure, Nakashima utilized natural knot holes, old shrinkage cracks stabilized with butterfly joints and showcasing live-edges to retain the character of the trees used in the construction of his pieces. All these features can be seen in this bench, of which a similar example is in the collection of the Smithsonian.

Sun fading and finish wear to the seat; good structural condition.
