Meiji period (1868-1912), horizontal porcelain very finely hand painted with a school of fish, each articulated with much detail and care, the surrounding border has a ruyi head pattern and outside of that a wisteria pattern against a gold ground, dimpled corners, two red artist seals to lower right of composition, impressed kanji seal 善 for Zenji to reverse.

9 3/4 x 18 in.

The seal is of Kato Zenji III of Seto, who was commissioned to make decorated plaques for the Imura Hikojiro of Yokohama, and was renowned for his enameling prowess.

Very good estate condition; old U.S. Customs label to underside.
