Sumi-e is a term referring to a traditional style of brush painting that originated in China and spread throughout Japan and Korea, using "Freely Controlled" brush strokes rendered with brush, ink, inkstone, and paper.

Kigel's work combines this tradition with Western art styles. An active artist in Maine, Kigel uses this method to capture the local flora and fauna. Kigel is a member of the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, and the Round Top Center for the Arts in Damariscotta, Maine. She is active in the Sumi-e Society of America and is the president of the Maine Art Gallery in Wiscasset.
