Chinese scholars did not often go out into nature, but studied and meditated on nature in their studios. For these scholars, rocks represented a microcosm of the natural world and were prized items. The rocks were often found in remote places, the finest coming from riverbeds or mountains with special features such as color tones, texture, or appearing like miniature mountains or other elements in nature.
