Four Early Photograph Albums Featuring World Travel and a Lusitania Voyage
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
The first album is personalized for a Wendell L. Nichols and is titled "Cruise of the Victoria Louise" in gilt. This ship was the second "Victoria Louise," the ill-fated original being the first cruise ship in modern history some ten years earlier. This book documents a Caribbean cruise taken by wealthy families in the 1910s. Places depicted include Cuba, Panama, Venezuela, Trinidad, Barbados, Martinique and St. Thomas with scenes of special interest being the raised hulk of the U.S.S.Maine in Havana and the Panama Canal under construction; the second album documents a family visit to Britain, the Mediterranean, points in North Africa, and...a voyage on the Lusitania as is apparent by an imprinted life preserver in one photograph; the third book is largely given to scenes of the Netherlands and culminates in an American lakeside resort; the fourth book is largely devoted to Italy with scenes of Rome, Venice and the Italian Alps.
