Mary Abbott was an Abstract Expressionist artist in New York in the 1940s and 1950s. Despite her immense talent, her work did not receive the recognition it was due because of her sex.

Mary Abbott was born to a socially well-connected family in New York City in 1921. She studied under George Grosz at the Art Students League and modeled as a young woman. She met Willem De Kooning, who became a friend and lover, and was introduced to the other artists and writers who frequented the Cedar Bar.

In the 1970s, Abbott was teaching at the University of Minnesota. She eventually returned to the East Coast, dividing her time between a loft in Manhattan and a small house in Southampton.
