19th or 20th century, Iran, Safavid style, colors on fabric, a very fine painting of the prophet Muhammad riding upon his Buraq traveling through the heavens, Muhammad appears without a veil or face covering and surrounded by celestial figures, presented under glass with mat in black frame, comes together with original receipt from Maggs Brothers, London dated 16 February, 1925.

From the estate of Dr. Andreas Nomikos was a teacher, artist, set designer, and professor emeritus of Theater at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He was born in Alexandria Egypt in 1917 and studied at the University of Athens and the Slade School of Fine Art, London. In the 1950s he moved to New York, and designed opera sets for the City Center in New York and San Francisco Opera Company and abroad. Later, he taught at the University of Indiana at Bloomington and at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro from 1971 until his retirement.

The fabric has been laid down on a later board; there is scattered paint flaking and wear to edges; area of retouch to top center of fabric.
