Circa mid 20th century, 21.75 in. turned wood butt-section with aluminum components marked THE LEONARD ROD / H.L. LEONARD ROD CO. / MAKERS with rubber fighting butt, two 80.75 in. top sections with cork foregrips and aluminum ferrules, one 74.75 in. top section with cork foregrip and aluminum ferrule, three section cotton rod sleeve.

In-house shipping is available for one-piece fishing rods and fishing rod and reel combinations. Winning bid invoices must be settled prior to organizing shipping. Shipments will carry full insurance with an adult signature required. Packaging cost is $50 per box, in addition to UPS shipping and insurance rates.

This surf rod belonged to Sally Hughes-Schrader who was a professor of zoology at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina from 1962 until 1966. Married in 1920 to Franz Schrader, a well-respected cytologist and geneticist, together they were a renowned husband and wife team in the field of scientific research. Through the years and almost to the end of her life, Hughes-Schrader spent time alone off the coast of Maine fishing for striped bass with this very rod.

Overall good estate condition, bamboo and cork have minimal to no age and use imperfections, thread wrappings are intact at guides, smaller length rod section missing one guide near top, cotton sleeve has moderate soiling and minor abrasion tears in multiple areas, hand written pen information on outside, cinch ties are frayed and torn.
