The Spanish treasure galleon
Atocha, while en route to Spain in 1622, sank off the Florida Keys laden with a vast treasure of gold, silver and precious stones. After many futile attempts to locate her, she was finally found in the late 20th century by salvor Mel Fisher and her legendary cargo came to light amid much fanfare.
Private Collection and by Descent, Cincinnati, Ohio This coin and its mate were acquired on March 3, 1994 from "Facets," a Virginia Beach retail shop (copy of receipt included). The present consignor had been to a lecture by former Mel Fisher associate James Sinclair, from whom these coins were purchased.
Designated "Grade 2," this desirable cob has a full shield on the obverse and a perfectly centered cross on the reverse.
