Tang dynasty (618-907), earthenware with traces of slip and red pigment, two male figures wearing hoods and riding atop horses with short manes and tails, one with hands up as if holding the horse reigns and the other with body contorted and one leg bent upwards as if in motion, they come together with identical carved wooden stands.
11 3/4 x 9 1/2 x 4 1/4 in. , with stand 13 in.
From the collection of Thomas English Cody (1889-1948), the great nephew of Buffalo Bill Cody, and by family descent. Good estate condition; some cracking and loss to pigments; figures may have had original items held in hands now lacking; scattered repairs and restoration.
