Stacy, North Carolina, circa 1900, carved and painted wood, glass eyes, bottom marked MF.

Length 15.25 in.

Purchased at the first Core Sound Decoy Festival in 1988.

Mitchell is Carteret County's oldest known and most celebrated carver. His decoys have international acclaim. Like many gifted artists, Mitchell was somewhat eccentric and was known for having a furious temper; however, he was a perfectionist which is evident in his work. Canvasback decoy

Old gunning paint with moderate wear, one glass eye is missing. X-Ray shows head is original to the body. The X-Ray also shows an incised A on the back under the paint which indicates this decoy was once in the hunting rig of Andrew Mason.
