Tang dynasty (618-907), earthenware with traces of slip and red pigment, a large prancing horse with head lowered, expressive open mouth, short tail, wearing a blanket and saddle, the horse is set into a tiered rectangular base with carving to center tier, light fixture is fitted to side of the base, two lightbulb fittings, topped with a carved celadon colored hardstone double lotus finial, comes together with old fabric lampshade.

From the collection of Thomas English Cody (1889-1948), the great nephew of Buffalo Bill Cody, and by family descent. Multiple old repairs and restoration to entire sculpture especially the feet and legs, tail, neck, saddle and blanket; losses to original pigments on saddle and blanket; lampshade has wear and fabric tears.
