Lot Details & Additional Photographs
An organically formed craggy rock with large arched billowing top over a more narrow body, embodying a much larger craggy boulder often seen in nature and in classic Chinese art, the rock balances perfectly in its custom fitted carved wooden base.
HOA 25 in.
Chinese scholars did not often go out into nature, but studied and meditated on these items in their studios, such as rocks, which represented a microcosm of the universe. The rocks were often found in remote places, the finest coming from riverbeds or mountains with special features such as color tones, texture, or appearing like miniature mountains or other elements in nature.
Collected from the Song dynasty (960 - 1279) onwards, Lingbi rocks have been especially prized by Chinese connoisseurs and were particularly admired for their hard, resonant quality and lightly textured surface. With its waisted form and dramatic projections, this fine example can be viewed from multiple angles, each providing a different perspective.
