Back Bay, Virginia, circa 1940, painted over wire construction,

Length 26.5 in.

The son of Peter Carroll, a well-known guide and market hunter of his era, Jammie Carroll followed in his father’s footsteps. Peter worked at the Pocahontas Fowling Club in the southern waters of Back Bay, and from 1928 to 1940, Jammie served as a guide at the same club. Afterward, he became a commercial guide for visiting sportsmen, a role he held for nearly 30 years. Over the course of five decades, Jammie hunted the southern waters of Back Bay and developed an intimate knowledge of the area, knowing it as well as the back of his hand.
