Edo period (1615-1868), 19th century, carved wood painted with gesso and polychrome pigments, highlighted in gilt, the guardian figure has painted glass eyes, his hair is raised as if against a strong wind, he holds his arms out to protect, one holding a rod, his fierce expression and muscular body are meant to scare away evil spirits, he stands mounted upon a rectangular terrace base underside retaining label for "Bertram & Son /100 & 101 / Dean St., Oxford St. Upholsters & Cabinet Makers / Established 1830", a London based carver, gilder and cabinet maker (fl.1839-1902).
