From the Personal Collection of Mr. Kroghie Andresen Charlotte, North Carolina Harvey Flowers and his wife Mattie had their home place and country store a few miles east of Swan Quarter. Mattie operated the country store for many years. According to Jack Dudley's book,
Mattamuskeet and Ocracoke Waterfowl Heritage, Mattie Harvey reminiscing about her husband, "Harvey loved to hunt. He carried out parties and made a good living. Harvey and Percy loved each other. They worked all summer in the shed part of my family's country store making decoys. They'd go in the swamp and dig in the ground to find crooked roots for the necks. They'd hammer and carry on. They worked and worked and really enjoyed them decoys. When Harvey guided on the lake, everybody had to have a lot of decoys. They liked to hunt. Everybody who came here wanted them decoys."
