Vivian Maier was an American street photographer whose work has gained immense posthumous acclaim. Born in New York City, Maier spent parts of her childhood in France before returning to the United States in the 1950s. While many details about her are still unknown, she worked most of her life as a nanny in Chicago, using her free time to photograph urban life. She captured over 150,000 images, primarily of people, animals, and architecture in Chicago and New York City.
Maier shot mostly with a Rolleiflex camera and had a distinct style marked by candid, often intimate moments. Despite her prolific output, she kept her work largely private and undiscovered during her lifetime. Her photography came to public attention in 2007 when boxes of her negatives were purchased at a storage auction by John Maloof. Maloof has championed the project of archiving and reconstructing Maier's work to bring to the public eye. The discovery led to international exhibitions and documentaries, including
Finding Vivian Maier (2013) that was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Posthumously, Maier is now recognized as one of the most accomplished street photographers in history.
