From the Collection of Ron W. Djuren, Durham, North Carolina Bill Bamberger - a North Carolina native - is an American documentary photographer known for capturing the lives of individuals and communities undergoing social and economic change. Bamberger has taught in the Folklore Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and he currently teaches at Duke University’s Center for Documentary Studies.
Bamberger's first major photographic project documented people living in Durham County from 1979 to 1982. These photographs provide a visual record of Durham’s diverse communities before rapid gentrification began reshaping the city. A book and traveling exhibition based on the project were shown at Duke University, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Reece Museum at East Tennessee State University.
Bamberger has also had solo-exhibitions at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University; the Yale University Art Gallery; the North Carolina Museum of Art; and others. The artist's website explains "A trademark of Bamberger’s exhibitions is that they are first shown in the community where he has chosen to photograph, prior to their museum exhibition."
Good overall condition; some light toning and slight curling at sheet edges.
