Private Collection, Northern California The Vista-Dome was a signature feature of the California Zephyr, a passenger train that began service in 1949, jointly operated by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad, Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, and Western Pacific Railroad. The train was famous for its scenic route between Chicago and Oakland, California, traversing the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada, with dome cars offering panoramic views. Known as the "most talked about train in America," the California Zephyr became iconic for combining luxury rail travel with breathtaking landscapes before its original run ended in 1970.
