Stratford, Connecticut, circa 1880, carved and painted wood, hollow body, inserted wood eyes.

Ben Holmes benefited sportsmen by carving duck decoys, but he himself never hunted. He learned his trade from Albert Laing and developed great carving and painting skills. His decoys are highly sought after by discernible collectors. This black duck is an excellent example.
