Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Norfolk, Virginia, circa 1900, cast iron.
Length 13.25 in.
Norfolk, Virginia, was a major center for casting iron decoys, particularly for use in sinkbox hunting. While few specific foundries have been documented by name, it is known that regional blacksmiths and ironworks were responsible for producing these heavy, functional decoys. Norfolk-style sinkbox decoys are often distinguished by their distinctive shape and paint style, with many examples representing canvasback ducks, a common species in the Chesapeake Bay region.
Original with rust and pitting to the surface.
