William Mackey, Jr. in his book entitled
American Bird Decoys published in 1965, elegantly describes two of these wire billed shorebirds, "An inspired pair of yellowlegs that are effective and simple, seeing service at Whalebone, on North Carolina's lonely Outer Banks. The sharp planing uses the faceting and dark shadows for purposeful concentration to form these sculptures. The ingenious though untutored hand of this carver produced three-dimensional creations with a semblance of careless haste. Rather than copying from life, the primitive hand, with all its limitations, could infer such a cubistic sensitivity."
