Edo period (1615-1868), 18th century, a gold lacquer
suzuribako (writing box) decorated in relief with large pine trees inlaid with mother-of-pearl and silver rocks to the cover, the interior of cover and box with raised butterflies and birds, the interior with a divided tray that lifts out and contains a floral silver water dropper.

Matte like finish to lacquer from sun exposure, the area that was shielded by the cover has original lacquer finish; some cracking with loss to lacquer on lower sides of box and a small spot to the underside of the box; small nicks to upper rim of cover.
