20th century, distemper on cloth, features a single deity, Padmasambhava, seated on a lotus blossom throne in a simple landscape with no accompanying figures, brocade border, framed under glass with fabric mat in tiered gilt wood frame.



Frame dimensions 34 x 25 in., Sight size 18 1/2 x 13 in.

Padmasambhava's name means "Lotus Born," and refers to his miraculous birth within a lotus flower emerging from the waters of Lake Danakosha in Oddiyana. Padmasambhava is depicted in this thangka painting in his most recognizable form with a thin mustache while wearing a feather capped pandita hat and nestling a khatvanga staff in the crook of his arm.

Overall good estate condition; some light creasing and scattered spots of water or discoloration to mainly upper portion of the painting; not examined outside of the frame.
