Circa 1970s, carved and painted wood.
Private Collection, Chincoteague, Virginia Maryland duck decoy carving has deep roots in the Chesapeake Bay region, dating back to the early 1800s. Centered around communities like Havre de Grace and the Eastern Shore, it emerged from the needs of commercial hunters who relied on durable, functional decoys. Over time, carvers began adding artistic touches, blending utility with folk art. Notable names like the Ward brothers, R. Madison Mitchell, and Captain John Graham helped shape the tradition, which continues today as both a respected craft and a celebrated cultural heritage of the Bay.
Made by Capt. Harry Jobes, Jim Pierce, and Evans McKinney.
Original paint with mild scuffing.
