Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Circa 1830s, horn and wood plug with 2 pocket leather bag.
Horn length 9in., bag 7 x8 in.
Used from the 1700s to early 1800s, powder horns stored black powder for muzzleloading guns. Made from cow horn, they were durable, waterproof, and often handmade. Many were carved with names, maps, animals, or symbols, blending utility with personal expression. North Carolina examples reflect German and Scotch-Irish influences and the region’s backcountry culture. These everyday objects reveal the survival needs and folk artistry of early settlers.
Overall good estate condition, chip in wood plug, wear to the leather from age and normal use.
