Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Patented May 31st, 1887, this once popular music-making machine is powered by air bellows and a hand crank. Its 6-1/2 in. wooden cylinders host small metal pins strategically placed to bring forth specific notes while the crank is being turned. Anyone with the stamina to keep turning a "cob" can play this device. A period sheet with operating instructions is glued to the underside of the lid.
12-1/2 x 18-1/4 x15 in.
From the Collection of the late John Firenze, Long Island, New York Most of the cylinders are early.
Minor paint losses to the platform supporting the wooden box; minor chips; the instruction sheet with severe damp stains, yet still legible...and useful. Overall very good condition.
